Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev's X Account Hacked to Shill Fake 'Vladhood' Token

Robinhood’s communications team said Thursday that CEO Vlad Tenev’s X account was briefly taken over by attackers who used it to promote a fraudulent meme coin, the latest scam to piggyback on the brokerage’s crypto ambitions.

The bogus post, since deleted, pitched a token called Vladhood, trading under the ticker VLAD, and framed it as the “official mascot of Robinhood Chain.” It went a step further, falsely claiming the coin was slated for a listing on the Robinhood app—a hook designed to lend the scheme legitimacy through Tenev’s verified profile.

“Our CEO Vlad Tenev’s X account was compromised and posted a fake promotion for a meme coin,” the company wrote from its official comms account, adding that the token was not authorized. Robinhood said the account was subsequently secured.

The episode fits an uncomfortable pattern of high-profile accounts on X and other social-media platforms being hacked to promote meme coin scams. Throughout 2024, as meme coin trading hit a frenzy, celebrity accounts on X were frequently hacked to promote fake meme coins, including those belonging to Sydney Sweeny, Doja Cat, and 50 Cent.

Robinhood, meanwhile, launched the public mainnet of Robinhood Chain, its Ethereum layer-2 network, on July 1, pitching it as infrastructure for tokenized stocks and other real-world assets. Instead, early activity has been dominated by speculative meme coins, and the network has as a result now drawn its share of scams and rug pulls.

Losses have piled up. One holder of CashCat—the chain’s most prominent meme coin—reportedly lost $56,000 to a compromised smart contract, while other traders described funds vanishing the instant swaps confirmed.

For Tenev, who once dismissed assets lacking underlying utility before conceding his chain “works great for memes too,” the hack underscores how meme coin frenzy can crowd even ventures built for serious trading.
