Historic rarities headline ANA summer show

Canadian collectors planning a trip to Pittsburgh this summer will have an opportunity to view some of the world’s most important numismatic treasures when the American Numismatic Association hosts its 2026 World’s Fair of Money from Aug. 25-29 at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center.

The annual convention will feature never-before-seen rarities, famous museum pieces, shipwreck treasure, historical documents and portions of one of the world’s most valuable private coin collections. Many Canadian collectors are members of the ANA.

Among the headline attractions is the public debut of a major portion of the renowned Tyrant Collection, a multi-million-dollar assemblage regarded as the world’s most valuable private coin collection. Titled Tyrants of the Golden Horn, the exhibit will feature 224 coins representing virtually every Byzantine emperor and numerous Ottoman rulers, spanning more than 1,700 years of history.

The ANA Money Museum Showcase will present a range of special exhibits drawn from the museum’s holdings and important private collections. Visitors will be able to view one of only two known examples of the 1921 satin-finish proof $20 Saint-Gaudens double eagle, displays examining the evolution of Liberty on American coinage, and exhibits exploring Indian Peace Medals and the famous Athenian “owl” tetradrachm.

Several exhibits have been created to coincide with the 250th anniversary of American independence. Among them are displays featuring historic versions of the Declaration of Independence and exhibits tracing Liberty’s role on United States coinage from the nation’s founding to the present day.

Collectors interested in modern rarities will find a major display presented by GreatCollections, the ANA’s official auctioneer. The exhibit includes the top-ranked collection of classic U.S. silver commemorative coins assembled by ANA member Mike Fuljenz over two decades, along with the Palos Verdes Collection of dramatic mint errors featuring double strikes, off-metal errors, wrong planchets and other production anomalies.

Historical artifacts will also play a prominent role at the convention. One exhibit will feature treasure and personal effects recovered from the wreck of the S.S. Central America, the famous “Ship of Gold” that sank in 1857 carrying tons of California gold. The display includes coins, ingots, personal belongings and images documenting the recovery effort.

Paper money collectors will have an opportunity to view a rare World War II-era “short snorter” banknote signed by actor James Stewart while serving as a combat pilot with the U.S. Army Air Forces. The note forms part of a larger display featuring more than 1,300 signatures of military leaders, diplomats and other notable figures assembled by the Short Snorter Project.

Beyond the exhibits, the convention is expected to attract more than 500 dealers from across the United States and abroad, offering rare coins, paper money, medals, tokens and bullion. Educational seminars, collector presentations, family activities and free informal evaluations of coins and banknotes will also be offered throughout the week.

The World’s Fair of Money remains one of the largest annual numismatic gatherings in North America and has long attracted Canadian collectors, dealers and exhibitors. Additional information about the convention, accommodations and admission is available at WorldsFairOfMoney.com.
