The 2026-W Enhanced Uncirculated American Gold Eagle launches today from the United States Mint, carrying a premium price but also several features that will make it one of the year’s most watched collector coins.

Most notably, it is the first American Gold Eagle struck with the Mint’s enhanced uncirculated finish. This special treatment combines laser frosting for a brilliant metallic luster with selective matte laser finishing, creating dramatic high-contrast visuals. The coin also features a 1776 ~ 2026 dual date and a Liberty Bell “250” privy mark, both honoring the nation’s Semiquincentennial.
These elements, along with the loyal collector base for Gold Eagles, will drive strong demand. For context, the related 2026-W Proof American Gold Eagles opened in March with combined sales of 27,979 coins across all options in just four days — despite prices ranging from $685 to $11,410.
While this year’s proofs also carry the dual date and Liberty Bell privy mark, they lack the unique enhanced uncirculated finish. That distinction provides a meaningful boost to the uncirculated series, which has seen softer sales in recent years:
- 2019 — 5,851
- 2020 — 6,284
- 2021 — 9,063
- 2022 — 8,900
- 2023 — 6,626
- 2024 — 2,998
- 2025 — 2,669
Another useful benchmark comes from the only prior American Eagle issue with this finish: the 2013-W Enhanced Uncirculated American Silver Eagle, released in a special two-coin set. Sales reached 235,689 units during the set’s four-week ordering window.

Note: Unfortunately, the Mint’s official images, and even many photos, do not fully capture the appeal of a coin’s enhanced uncirculated finish.
American Gold Eagle Designs
Appearing on the obverse, or heads side, of each 1-ounce, 22-karat gold coin is a classic design long favored by collectors. It depicts Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ iconic full-length Liberty, shown with flowing hair, holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. The design appeared on $20 gold coins from 1907 to 1933, returned in 1986 for American Gold Eagle bullion and proof coins, and was used again beginning in 2006 for the uncirculated series.
The obverse was refreshed in 2021, when the Mint used historical artifacts and modern technology to more closely reflect Saint-Gaudens’ original intent. Inscriptions on the obverse normally include LIBERTY and the year. This year’s Semiquincentennial issue adds a Liberty Bell privy mark with the numeral “250,” along with the dual date 1776 ~ 2026.
The reverse, also introduced in 2021, features a close-up profile of an eagle designed by Artistic Infusion Program artist Jennie Norris and sculpted by Medallic Artist Renata Gordon. Inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, 50 DOLLARS, and 1 OZ. FINE GOLD.
Each coin also includes anti-counterfeiting variable reeding along the edge.
